"It is to attain the highest of states in which the individual self dissolve inseparably in a
Brahman that a man becomes a Sanyasin after forsaking the very karma that gives him
inward maturity. When he is initiated into Sanyasa he is taught four mantras, the four
(principal) Mahavakyas. The four proclaim are identity of the self with the Brahman.
When these Mahavakyas are reflected upon through the method known as
"nididhyasana", the seeker will arrive at the stage of realizing the oneness of the
individual self and the Brahmam"-the Sage of Kanchi.
